Counseling

Child

Watching your child struggle can be a difficult experience for parents and families. Sometimes, it can feel as if you don't know what they need, or maybe you think you do, but what you've tried doesn't seem to help. The counseling journey for your child begins with me getting to know you and your child's world: what you might see as your child's challenge might be different from what they see as their challenge! This is okay, both views are respected. Therapy for children looks very different than therapy for adults. I use art, movement, and play therapy techniques to allow your child to express themselves in a way that makes sense to them. Therapy can offer children the opportunity to process and move through an emotional experience, discover a sense of strength in their self, and learn new ways to communicate needs. Parents and caregivers are an integral part of the process, and I can provide recommendations for supporting your child and creating a secure attachment.

Adolescent/Teen
As an adolescent or teen, it can seem as if no one understands you. This can make it difficult to connect with others in a meaningful way. It can feel lonely. The counseling journey for you is all about self exploration and expression. In the counseling room, you are not judged! You are accepted, because you are you! It is a safe place to let your thoughts and feelings be known. Through counseling, I want you to uncover your superpower, feel strong, and be proud of what makes you different. This discovery process isn’t always easy, sometimes it's uncomfortable. I know you’re up for it though, and you’ll have a companion along for the ride. You’re more capable than you think you are.

Adult
Whether you're familiar or new to the process, there is no right or wrong time to begin the journey of counseling. What brings you to this place might be things that don't seem like a "big deal" but they're getting to you, or they might seem like a really big deal and it's tough to function. I believe it's important to pay attention to the small things in life just as much as the big things. Therapy offers an opportunity to renew or begin a commitment to your self care, growth, and healing. Through counseling we will:
Explore your past and revisit old narratives about yourself through your adult perspective
Care for wounded parts of your personality
Invite curiosity and compassion of unwanted thoughts or feelings
Build understanding of your unique emotional, thought, and behavior patterns
Gain perspective on your role in relationships
Identify what matters to you
Deconstruct or adapt to hurdles that keep you from living freely

Educator Professional Development Workshops

Maria brings her experience as both a teacher and a mental health professional into her workshops for educators. Her presentation style highlights her warm, direct, and down-to-earth personality. She creates her workshops for busy educators by offering practical, engaging, and thought-provoking content and discussion. Collaborating with her begins with discussing the unique needs and context of your school environment. Potential workshop themes include Educator Mental Health Strategies, Therapeutic Classroom Management, and Improving Learning Outcomes Through Connection Skills. If there is a mental health topic or need that is important to you, Maria will design a custom workshop to suit your school's needs. She provides full workshop plans and handouts in advance.

Author Talks

Bring the author of The Empathetic Classroom: How a Mental Health Mindset Supports Your Students--and You to your school, classroom, community, or book group. Maria will share with you her journey from student, to teacher, to counselor, and why it was important for her to share what she learned along the way with other educators. Having Maria visit your group of readers is an excellent way to launch or conclude the reading of The Empathetic Classroom, and provide in-depth discussion of concepts in the text and what they look like in real classrooms.
